Showcase row · 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Student projects on the floor in Charleston, WV

A row of tables where students demo what they built. Games, hardware, tools, and coursework that outgrew the assignment. Walk up, try it, and ask the person who made it how it works.

What the showcase is

Every table is staffed by the student or team that built the thing on it. Nothing is behind glass. If a project is playable you play it, and if it is not, the person standing there will show you what it does and what broke on the way.

Projects come out of COSC, DASC, and MATH coursework, from capstone work, and from things people built on their own time. Prospective students, families, and faculty all end up at this row, so it is worth standing at your table rather than leaving a laptop running alone.

Free to see, no ticket, no sign up. The row sits between the stations wall and the tabletop end, so it catches traffic from both.

On the tables this year

Playable

The Hextraction board

The competition board is built from tiles designed and printed by students and by people in the community. At the showcase table you can see the tiles that did not make the cut, the ones that broke, and the print files behind them.

The board is open all day at the tabletop tables, with no bracket this year. See the tabletop tables.

Built in house

The FUSER controller

A DJ controller students designed and built around a Raspberry Pi Pico 2, running as a standard USB game controller. It plays all day on the stations wall, and the team is on the showcase row to talk through the build.

How the station works

Your project here

Tables are still open. Submissions get the same treatment as the projects above: what it is, who built it, and what it took. [CONFIRM: table count for the showcase row.]

Submit a project

Needs confirming The full project lineup. Once submissions close this becomes the real list, grouped by department, with a one line description and a name on every table.

Who can show something

Any currently enrolled University of Charleston student, on your own or as a team. Coursework counts, capstone work counts, a game you have been building in your dorm counts. Finished is not a requirement, and a project that half works is often the more interesting table.

Faculty sponsored group projects are welcome. If you graduated in the last year and want to bring something back, ask. [CONFIRM: alumni policy.]

How to submit

  1. Send the project name, your name and program, and three or four sentences on what it is.
  2. Say what you need at the table: power, a wall for a screen, floor space, quiet, or nothing at all.
  3. Say whether a visitor can try it, and how long one turn takes.
  4. Send one photo or screenshot if you have one. It goes on this page.

Submissions go to showcase@uceaglecon.com and you get an answer within a week. [CONFIRM: submission deadline and the address.]

Running your table

Set up between 10:00 AM and 10:45 AM. Somebody from your team stands at the table while the doors are open, and you can trade off with a teammate for lunch. The room is loud, so a printed sheet with the project name and one sentence saves your voice.

Tear down starts at 5:00 PM. Take everything with you, including the placard.

What you get

  • One 6 ft table and two chairs, no cost.
  • Power at the table and a shared power strip.
  • A printed placard with the project name, your name, and your program.
  • A listing on this page with your description and photo.
  • Six hours of a general audience walking past, including prospective students and families.

Bring your own laptop, screen, headphones, and extension cord. Wifi is campus guest wifi, so do not plan a demo that depends on it.

Under discussion

Whether the showcase carries an award, and who would judge it. A visitors' pick decided by ballot at the check in table is the current proposal. [CONFIRM.]
